This isn't your typical power fantasy; it's a descent into despair, revenge, and the brutal realities of war. It's a story that lingers in your mind long after you've turned the final page.
First Impressions
From the outset, I was struck by the sheer bleakness of the premise. We're thrown into a conflict between humans and elves, where the elves, wielding the power of organic necromancy, unleash horrifying monsters upon humanity. The story follows Imina, a young man who loses everything in the initial elven invasion. His village is destroyed, his family slaughtered, and his best friend betrays him. This sets the stage for a tale of vengeance, one fueled by grief and rage. It's a heavy start, but it immediately grabbed my attention.
What Works Well
The strength of "Senketsu no Elf" lies in its unflinching portrayal of war and its impact on the human psyche. The author doesn't shy away from depicting the gruesome realities of conflict, including mass killings and genocide. It's a world where anyone can die, and the consequences of violence are far-reaching.
I was also impressed by the character development, particularly that of Imina. He's not a hero in the traditional sense; he's an anti-hero, twisted by the cruelty he's witnessed.
