"My Childhood Friend Who Rejected Me Is Coming on to Me!" is definitely a ride. It's one of those stories where the premise alone pulls you in, promising a mix of awkwardness, comedy, and maybe a little bit of sweet romance. And while it delivers on some of those aspects, it also has its share of quirks that might not appeal to everyone.
First Impressions
The initial chapters set up a classic scenario: boy confesses, girl rejects, girl realizes she messed up. It's a familiar trope, and the story leans into it hard. We're introduced to Yukiya, the rejected childhood friend, Kanae, the girl who does the rejecting (and then the pursuing), and Souta, the popular guy who complicates everything. My first impression was that this would be a lighthearted, easy read, perfect for when I wanted to switch my brain off.
What Works Well
I appreciated the multiple points of view. It gave me a better understanding of each character's motivations and prevented me from making assumptions based on a single perspective. Kanae's eventual determination to win Yukiya back was also a plus. She doesn't stay indecisive for long, and once she realizes her feelings, she goes all in. The author also seems to be aware of common novel stereotypes, poking fun at them in a way that I found pretty amusing.
Areas of Concern
The characters can be a bit of a mixed bag. While Kanae's proactiveness is refreshing, her initial reasons for rejecting Yukiya felt a little flimsy to me. Souta, the "rival," veers into caricature territory with his narcissistic tendencies and delusional harem fantasies. Some readers might find him more cringe-worthy than comedic. Also, the story relies heavily on misunderstandings, which, depending on your tolerance, can either be a source of humor or frustration.
