First Impressions

From the very beginning, I was captivated by the characters. Ming Shu's difficult childhood immediately tugged at my heartstrings. His early life, marked by neglect and loneliness, made me want to reach through the pages and offer him comfort. The story begins with Ming Shu as a child and it's both realistic and heart-wrenching.

What Works Well

The novel excels in its portrayal of character growth. Watching Ming Shu evolve from a timid child to a confident young man was incredibly rewarding. The relationship between Ming Shu and Xiao Yu'an, his gege, is the heart of the story. Their bond is beautifully developed, transitioning from a brotherly connection to something deeper. The author does a wonderful job of portraying the inner turmoil and confusion that Xiao Yu'an experiences as he grapples with his feelings.

The side characters also add depth and richness to the narrative. The Xiao family is incredibly warm and supportive, providing a much-needed contrast to Ming Shu's own dysfunctional family. I especially loved Xiao Jin Cheng, the fun-loving antics of the family, and the ever-supportive friend, Du Hao. The story also excels at portraying children as children, not miniature adults, which is a refreshing change.

Areas of Concern

While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, there were a couple of aspects that gave me pause. The pacing felt a little slow at times, and I wished there had been more focus on Ming Shu and Xiao Yu'an as an established couple. I also felt that the ending was a bit rushed, leaving me wanting more.
