My Thoughts on Finest Servant
"Finest Servant" is a web novel that promises a blend of historical intrigue, modern wit, and a dash of harem romance. As I dove into the early chapters, I found myself both intrigued and slightly hesitant. The premise, a modern-day "ladies' man" transported to ancient China, felt familiar yet ripe with potential for comedic gold. However, some of the early character interactions left me with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters introduce us to Lin Wanrong, our protagonist, and his less-than-ideal circumstances. His modern knowledge and "smooth" personality are immediately apparent, but I couldn't help but feel a bit put off by his internal monologue and interactions with certain female characters. There's a fine line between an anti-hero and a character that's simply unlikeable, and I felt the story tiptoed dangerously close to that line at times.
What Works Well
Despite my reservations, I can see why many readers find "Finest Servant" entertaining. The comedic elements, when they land, are genuinely funny. The MC's fish-out-of-water scenarios, coupled with his attempts to apply modern concepts to ancient society, create moments of levity. I also appreciate the author's willingness to explore the MC's flaws. He's not a perfect hero, and his arrogance and occasional crassness make him a more complex character, even if they're not always endearing. The story moves at a brisk pace, constantly introducing new conflicts and characters to keep the reader engaged. The way the MC navigates the merchant family's struggles and begins to build his influence is also compelling.
Areas of Concern
My main concern revolves around the MC's treatment of women and some of the problematic internal thoughts he expresses. While some argue it's simply his inner monologue and doesn't reflect his actions, I found it difficult to completely dismiss. The humor sometimes leans into sexist tropes, which detracted from my overall enjoyment. Additionally, the MC's rapid success in various endeavors felt a bit too convenient at times, bordering on unbelievable.

Final Verdict
"Finest Servant" is a novel with potential, but it's not without its flaws. If you enjoy anti-hero protagonists, fast-paced plots, and don't mind some potentially offensive humor, you might find it to be a fun read. However, if you're sensitive to sexist tropes or prefer morally upright characters, this novel might not be for you. I'd recommend approaching it with caution and being prepared to overlook some of its more problematic aspects.
