Description
In a certain small country that was part of a continent, there was the Helios Kingdom. In the academy which was dominated by nobles, there was a villainess named Maria who ruled over the school. Enter an enigmatic youth named Ryuu, who unfortunately was also the protagonist forced to transfer into that academy. Though he was uninterested with the academy life at first, he began to think about his own position and way of life as he built relationships with the various people he met in the academy. But then, along with his deepened friendship with Maria, he realized that for some reason, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. He followed her, almost like a stalker. This is the story of how Ryuu accepted his status, way of life, and his role as… Maria’s stalker.

My Thoughts on Villainess and the Stalker
First Impressions
"Villainess and the Stalker" certainly grabbed my attention with its intriguing premise. A haughty, powerful male lead from the academy falling for a duchess from a "backwater" country? Sign me up! The multiple POV and the promise of hidden abilities also piqued my interest. However, diving in, I quickly realized this story might be a bit of a mixed bag.
What Works Well
The core concept is genuinely compelling. The idea of exploring a Shoujo/Josei trope through a Seinen lens offers a fresh perspective. I also appreciate the author's attempt at intricate world-building, particularly the subtle political and societal nuances. When the story focuses on the interactions and the "intent" behind the characters' actions, it shines. The setup does hint at a potentially fascinating dynamic between the leads, and I'm eager to see how the "stalker" element plays out once the plot gains momentum.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the execution feels somewhat lacking. The "stream of consciousness" writing style, while potentially interesting, often leads to a confusing and disjointed reading experience. The constant flashbacks and perspective shifts make it difficult to follow the timeline and keep track of events. I also found the pacing to be quite slow. The story spends a considerable amount of time on exposition and internal monologues, which, while providing background information, can feel like an info dump and hinder the plot's progression. Honestly, I think that the main characters haven't interacted properly and I'm already more than 20 chapters in.
Final Verdict
"Villainess and the Stalker" has the potential to be a truly captivating story. The premise is unique, and the world-building hints at a complex and engaging setting. However, the confusing writing style and slow pacing hold it back. If you're willing to be patient and piece together the narrative, you might find something to enjoy here. But be prepared for a somewhat challenging reading experience. Overall, I'm cautiously optimistic and hoping the story improves as it progresses.
