The Rainlands
By haruka asahi, 朝陽遥
2016
Description
There were rumors of a place where the rains never ceased. Half of the month was a deafening, torrential downpour, and the other half a drizzle, at best slightly overcast. The sky was clear at most once or twice a month. How could people actually live in a place where it rained constantly? Was it some sort of divine protection, or simply the raw power of the human mind? Driven by a burning curiosity, I departed on a journey to the mountainous region known as The Rainlands. What I would discover was nothing like what I expected–a culture at times oddly familiar and yet disturbingly foreign.

My Thoughts on The Rainlands
First Impressions
"The Rainlands" immediately struck me as something different. In a landscape often dominated by power fantasies and rapid-fire plot developments, this story carves its own path. It promises a journey of introspection and cultural exploration, a welcome change of pace from the norm. If you're looking for a story to sink into and contemplate, rather than one to devour in a single sitting, this might be right up your alley.
What Works Well
The core strength of "The Rainlands" lies in its gentle, character-driven narrative. It feels like a breath of fresh air. The author clearly prioritizes building a rich tapestry of cultural nuances and exploring the complexities of human morality. I found myself drawn into the protagonist's journey, not because of any grand quest or overwhelming power, but because of the genuine humanity on display. The focus on exploration and discovery, both internal and external, is compelling. It invites readers to reflect on their own values and perspectives as they witness the protagonist navigate unfamiliar customs and beliefs. The writing style lends itself well to the story's overall tone.
Areas of Concern
While I appreciate the novel's focus on character and culture, some readers might find the pacing too slow. There isn't much action and conflict, so if you're looking for a thrill ride, this might not be the story for you. The lack of an overarching plot might also deter readers who prefer a more structured narrative.
Final Verdict
"The Rainlands" is a unique and thoughtful story that prioritizes character development and cultural exploration over action and plot. If you're seeking a calm, introspective read that challenges your perspectives and offers a glimpse into a richly imagined world, I recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a slower pace and a focus on the journey rather than the destination.
