This novel was a surprisingly enjoyable read, a sweet high school romance that exceeded my initial expectations. While not perfect, it offered a refreshing take on familiar tropes and left me feeling satisfied overall.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the premise – a seemingly average guy and the popular girl finding solace and connection in unexpected ways. The initial chapters were particularly strong, establishing a comfortable and chill atmosphere where the characters could genuinely be themselves. The playful banter between the leads felt realistic and endearing, making their interactions a highlight early on. It was also nice to see a male lead who wasn't afraid to interact with the female lead because of some irrational fear.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters and their evolving relationship. The male protagonist, despite his circumstances, is portrayed as a hardworking and resilient individual, while the female lead, though seemingly perfect, harbors her own vulnerabilities. I appreciated how the author explored the idea that everyone wears a mask, and the "unmasking" of the leads in front of each other felt like a pivotal moment. Their romance blossoms gradually, and it was heartwarming to see them support each other through difficult times, particularly the female lead's family issues. I also liked that the story didn't focus too heavily on school drama, instead prioritizing the development of the central relationship.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the majority of the story, I did find some aspects lacking. The later volumes felt somewhat rushed, and the introduction of unnecessary drama and side characters detracted from the cozy atmosphere established in the beginning. I also noticed that the female lead's personality became slightly less nuanced as the story progressed, leaning more towards a "less extreme yandere girlfriend" trope. The ending, with its focus on a basketball game, felt a bit anticlimactic and didn't provide the satisfying closure I was hoping for. I also wished there was more interaction between the MC and his mother.

Despite its flaws, "The Number Two Me and The Number One Girl (WN)" is a solid romance novel that I would recommend, especially if you're looking for a relatively short and sweet story with relatable characters and heartwarming moments.
