"The Lowly Lover is Preparing to Break Up with the Best Actor" is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions, and I’m still catching my breath. This novel dives headfirst into the kind of dramatic, angst-ridden territory that can either make or break a story. Luckily, for the most part, I found it quite compelling, even if parts were a bit… much.
First Impressions
Okay, right off the bat, be warned: this story is intense. We're talking toxic relationship vibes, a ML who starts off pretty awful, and a MC who initially seems to take way too much. It’s the kind of setup that made me want to simultaneously root for them and yell at them both. There is a clear power imbalance at the start that had me concerned, but I was willing to see how the author would resolve it.
What Works Well
What really grabbed me was the emotional depth. The author doesn't shy away from exploring the characters' flaws and vulnerabilities. The ML goes through a significant groveling period, which, let's be honest, is a key ingredient in any good wife-chasing crematorium story. I appreciated that the MC, while forgiving, wasn't a complete pushover. He recognized his worth and eventually grew from the initial doormat state. The ending, though hard-earned, felt satisfying, and I genuinely felt relieved when they finally got their happy ending. I also found the side characters to be quite engaging, especially the ML's mom, who was a surprising source of support.
Areas of Concern
The drama can get a little over-the-top. There were moments when I rolled my eyes at the sheer ridiculousness of the plot twists and the ML's constant near-death experiences. The white moonlight character felt underdeveloped, and I was hoping for more complexity from her. I also felt that the ML's mental health issues, while addressed, could have been handled with more nuance.
