Description
After four years of a political marriage, Fiona was finally blessed with a child. However, her happiness was short-lived. A tragic fall down the stairs caused her to lose the baby, and she was left unable to conceive again. This incident led to her divorce, as her husband chose to leave her, taking their unborn child and giving himself to his mistress. Devastated by the betrayal and loss, Fiona fell into deep despair. However, she soon learned that the Jorvia Ducal Household was searching for a caretaker for their infant heir. Deciding to take the position, she began her new life caring for the adorable young boy. Slowly but surely, Fiona’s broken heart started to heal. During this time, Fiona’s dedication and kindness deeply moved Duke Asher, who began to grow closer to her. He soon showered both Fiona and the child with genuine affection. However, at a royal ball Fiona attended with Asher, she was confronted by her ex-husband and his mistress. The woman, smiling smugly, declared, “Thanks to you, I’m so happy now.” Adding insult to injury, Fiona was mocked as being “barren” and told she had “no worth as a woman.” But how will Fiona respond to such cruelty—and will Asher stand by her side?

My Thoughts on Thanks to You, I Am Happy Now
"Thanks to You, I Am Happy Now" promised a fairytale-esque journey, and for the most part, it delivered. The synopsis lays out much of the plot, so going in, I knew what to expect: a story of betrayal, adoption, and ultimately, a second chance at happiness. I found myself drawn into the European setting and the promise of character growth, especially for the female protagonist.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the premise of a woman overcoming adversity. The "slice of life" tag also intrigued me, as I enjoy stories that focus on the everyday moments amidst larger conflicts. The idea of childcare playing a significant role added a unique element that I found appealing.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect of this novel is its focus on family and the development of the characters, particularly the protagonist. Witnessing her navigate the challenges of adoption and build a new life was genuinely heartwarming. The "devoted love interest" trope was also executed well, providing a comforting anchor amidst the drama. The author paints a vivid picture of the European setting, adding a layer of charm and escapism to the narrative. I found myself easily invested in the characters' emotional journeys.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I do have some reservations. The biggest one is that the resolution of the earlier betrayals could have been more impactful. The "face slapping," as some might call it, felt a bit underwhelming. I was hoping for a more cathartic confrontation and a stronger sense of justice being served. The predictability of the ending, while fitting for the fairytale theme, did diminish the element of surprise.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Thanks to You, I Am Happy Now" is a worthwhile read if you're looking for a feel-good story with a focus on family and second chances. While the revenge aspect could have been stronger, the heartwarming relationships and character growth make it an enjoyable experience. I'd recommend it to readers who appreciate josei romances with a touch of drama and a satisfying, albeit predictable, conclusion.
