Sekai ga Death Game ni Natta no de Tanoshii desu Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

My Thoughts on Sekai ga Death Game ni Natta no de Tanoshii desu

"Sekai ga Death Game ni Natta no de Tanoshii desu" certainly presents a unique premise, blending the apocalypse with game-like elements and a protagonist who starts as a shut-in. However, diving into the story reveals a mixed bag of potentially interesting ideas bogged down by some questionable execution.

First Impressions

The initial setup is intriguing. The world has turned into a death game, and our protagonist, a hikikomori, gains a unique class that seems tailored to his lifestyle. This could have been a clever subversion of the typical survival story, but I quickly found myself questioning some of the author's choices.

What Works Well

The core concept of a game-like apocalypse is appealing, and the early stages of character progression offer some promise. The protagonist's "Hikikomori" class, with its unique skills and the ability to control his room, presents an interesting spin on the typical overpowered protagonist trope. There is potential in the evolution of strength and the initial plot setup.

Areas of Concern

My biggest issue lies with the protagonist's character and motivations. Several readers have pointed out his inability to harm female zombies, even when they pose a direct threat. This, coupled with his "collecting" of undead girls in his room, creates a rather uncomfortable and hypocritical dynamic. The line between ecchi and something more problematic seems blurred, and his actions feel more like a shallow fantasy fulfillment than a nuanced character choice. The lottery system, while common in many web novels, feels a bit too convenient, handing the MC overpowered items without much effort.

Final Verdict

"Sekai ga Death Game ni Natta no de Tanoshii desu" has a few elements that might appeal to fans of the genre, particularly the game-like system and the initial premise. However, the problematic characterization of the protagonist, the questionable ethical choices, and the thin line between ecchi and something more unsavory ultimately overshadow the potential. I can't wholeheartedly recommend it unless you're willing to overlook these significant flaws.
