Description
“Until the day humanity falls.” In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases. In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe. An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot. But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds… Silver Award winner at the 12th Chinese Nebula Awards for Chinese Science Fiction.

My Thoughts on Little Mushroom
"Little Mushroom." Don't let the cute title fool you. This isn't a fluffy, lighthearted story; it's a poignant journey through a post-apocalyptic world, seen through the eyes of a naive, yet incredibly endearing, little mushroom. I went in expecting one thing and got something far more complex and emotionally resonant.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the unique premise: a mushroom that takes on a human form and embarks on a quest. But it quickly became clear that this was more than just a quirky adventure. The world-building is intricate and immersive, painting a vivid picture of a dying planet and the humans struggling to survive within it. The initial chapters were both intriguing and unsettling, setting the stage for a story filled with despair and hope.
What Works Well
What truly shines in "Little Mushroom" is its ability to balance the bleakness of its setting with moments of genuine warmth and connection. The relationship between An Zhe, the little mushroom, and Lu Feng, the cold and duty-bound Judge, is a slow-burn romance that unfolds naturally. Their interactions, filled with subtle affections and quiet understanding, offer a respite from the surrounding darkness.
The character development is also exceptional. An Zhe's journey from a naive observer to someone deeply invested in the fate of humanity is compelling. And Lu Feng, despite his initial stoicism, slowly reveals a depth of emotion that is both heartbreaking and beautiful. The moral questions raised throughout the story are thought-provoking, forcing me to consider the cost of survival and the meaning of humanity.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed "Little Mushroom," there were a few areas that could have been stronger. The ending felt somewhat rushed. I also felt that the side characters could have been more fleshed out.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Little Mushroom" is a truly remarkable novel. Its unique premise, compelling characters, and thought-provoking themes make it a story that will stay with me long after I've finished reading. If you're looking for a danmei novel that offers more than just romance, one that explores the depths of human nature in the face of adversity, then I highly recommend giving "Little Mushroom" a try. Just be prepared to shed a few tears along the way.
