Description
In the 23rd year of the Longfeng reign, the Crown Prince of the Eastern Palace had been deposed for five years. Once a figure of otherworldly grace, he was banished to the imperial mausoleum, crushed under endless humiliation. That same year, the Emperor, blinded by the pursuit of immortality, let the West Bureau eunuchs seize power. At the helm was Xue Shu, the Chief Eunuch of the West Bureau-a man whose influence eclipsed the court, silencing opposition with a single wave of his hand. Even the throne itself danced to his tune. Princes grovelled and schemed, desperate to curry favor, hoping he would elevate them to the imperial seat. But no one could’ve guessed that Xue Shu would one day retrieve the deposed Crown Prince from exile and personally help him ascend to the throne. The once untouchable, iron-fisted eunuch, who held the empire in his grasp, willingly knelt at the feet of the resplendent new Emperor, offering himself as nothing more than a footstool. On the eve of the enthronement ceremony, Yin Chengyu bathed and burned incense. The infamous Nine Thousand Years (Jiuqian Sui) cradled the imperial robes in his arms, personally dressing the future Emperor. In the full-length bronze mirror, the scarlet-robed Chief Eunuch of the West Bureau wrapped his arms around the Emperor-to-be, lowering his head to breathe in his scent, his voice a husky whisper laced with a mocking smile: “Your Majesty has finally achieved your ambitions. Might you grant me the chance to fulfill mine?” But it was all a dream. Yin Chengyu woke, yanked from the memories of his past life. It was the 17th year of Longfeng. He was still the noble and untouchable Crown Prince. His mother’s family had yet to be slaughtered, and he hadn’t been confined to the mausoleum, isolated and helpless. There was still a chance to change his fate-by roping in that scheming eunuch and wagering everything on one final, desperate gamble. Then he met Xue Shu again.

My Thoughts on Jiuqian Sui; Nine Thousand Years
"Jiuqian Sui; Nine Thousand Years" is a danmei novel that certainly left an impression. With its blend of historical intrigue, romance, and a touch of fantasy, it's easy to see why it's garnered a dedicated following. However, it's not without its quirks, and my experience was a mixed bag, albeit ultimately enjoyable.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was intrigued by the premise: a rebirth story featuring a Crown Prince and a powerful eunuch. The "opposites attract" dynamic, set against the backdrop of ancient China, had me hooked. I dove in, eager to see how their relationship would unfold.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its central relationship. The tension between Yin Chenyu and Xue Shu is undeniable, a slow burn that simmers throughout the story. Their individual character development is also well-executed, with both men displaying strength, intelligence, and a capacity for growth. The flashbacks, revealing the complexities of their past lives, are masterfully woven into the narrative, adding depth and nuance to their present interactions.
I also found the plot, with its palace intrigues, power struggles, and fight against external threats, to be engaging. The author paints a vivid picture of the setting, drawing me into the world of ancient China. It's clear that a lot of thought went into crafting the political landscape and the challenges faced by the characters. I also appreciated that the side characters were well-developed and had their own arcs.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did have some reservations. The writing style, or perhaps the translation, felt a bit uneven at times. I can see how some might find the prose overly descriptive or even "modern" for a historical setting, creating a slight disconnect. While I didn't find it overly distracting, I understand how it could pull some readers out of the story.
Final Verdict
Despite its minor flaws, "Jiuqian Sui; Nine Thousand Years" is a compelling read. The intense chemistry between the main characters, the well-developed plot, and the intriguing historical setting make it a worthwhile journey. If you're a fan of danmei with a slow-burn romance, political intrigue, and a touch of rebirth, I'd recommend giving this novel a chance. Just be prepared for a few stylistic quirks along the way.
