Description

"I’m a NEET but When I Went to Hello Work I Got Taken to Another World" is quite a mouthful, and my experience with it has been similarly mixed. This isekai story promises a unique twist on the genre, but whether it delivers depends heavily on your tolerance for certain tropes and character archetypes.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a NEET getting transported to another world to test an RPG-like job system for a god. It felt like a fresh take. The first volume, with its slower pace and focus on day-to-day life in the new world, had a certain charm. It felt almost like a slice-of-life isekai, which I found appealing.
What Works Well
The world-building, while not groundbreaking, is serviceable. The characters are generally distinct and easy to remember. The relationships, particularly within the harem, do progress, which is a refreshing change from some stories where the MC just collects potential partners. The action is present, and the overall plot progression is satisfactory. The blend of fantasy elements with the MC's modern-day knowledge can be entertaining at times, especially the introduction of mayonnaise.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, and one that seems to be echoed by many, is the main character. While some appreciate his "normalcy" and relate to his anxieties, I found him to be frustratingly useless and often contradictory. He frequently whines, is overly cautious, and doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. While the harem aspect may appeal to some, others found the characters shallow and their relationships with the MC unconvincing. The story, at times, feels like a generic wish-fulfillment fantasy with a lack of real stakes or depth.
