Description
Park Moonsoo worked REALLLLLLY hard in life before dying. After awakening to the memories of his previous life as Park Moonsoo, Milton thought he could finally have an easy life as a noble. At least, that was what he used to think before he found out about the enormous debt his father had left him. “Okay, I’ll pay off this damn debt. I will.” I died from working so hard to pay off the student loans in my previous life, but I’m burdened with more debt again? Milton wanted to sell the ancient scroll his father left behind to pay off his debt… Argh! I wanted to have an easy life, please leave me alone!

My Thoughts on Game of the Monarch
"Game of the Monarch" had such promise. I went in expecting a compelling kingdom-building story with a cunning protagonist, and for a while, that's what I got. The initial chapters hooked me with their blend of war, politics, and the MC's personal growth. It felt like a solid foundation for something great.
First Impressions
At the start, I was impressed with the MC's resourcefulness. He seemed genuinely clever, making the most of his situation and using his past life knowledge to his advantage. The system mechanics, while simple, added an interesting layer. I was eager to see him develop his territory and build his army.
What Works Well
The early focus on nation-building was definitely a highlight. It wasn't too fast-paced, and I appreciated the effort to include elements of military strategy and political intrigue. Some of the side characters also stood out, adding depth to the world. I also found the initial premise of the protagonist to be compelling, as he was trying to make the most out of the situation.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel takes a nosedive around the 50-chapter mark. The introduction of a particular female lead seems to trigger a significant decline in the MC's intelligence and agency. He starts making questionable decisions, becoming a "yes-man" and losing the cunning that initially drew me in. The plot becomes increasingly forced, with convenient coincidences and illogical enemy actions propping up the MC's progress. The story felt like it was dumbing down the surrounding characters just to make the protagonist look competent. I also felt like the ending came too quickly after such a long build up.

Final Verdict
"Game of the Monarch" ultimately falls short of its potential. While the initial chapters offer a glimpse of a compelling kingdom-building story, the plot loses its way as it progresses. The protagonist's character takes a hit, and the narrative relies on increasingly improbable scenarios. It's a shame because there are moments of brilliance, but the overall experience is ultimately disappointing. I'd give it a 3/5.
