It's a delightful blend of modern fantasy, cultivation, and a slow-burn romance that had me hooked. While it might not be for everyone, especially if you're seeking immediate action or intense romantic development, its unique charm and heartwarming characters make it a worthwhile read.

First Impressions

The synopsis and title didn't immediately grab me, and I can see why some might hesitate. It hints at a slice-of-life story about a yao (demon) integrating into human society, but it’s so much more than that. The initial chapters introduce Fu Li, our seemingly naive MC, and his entry into the human world. I was worried he might be too simple, but I quickly realized there's a lot more depth to him than meets the eye.

What Works Well

What truly shines in this novel is the world-building. The author seamlessly blends Chinese mythology with a modern setting. The concept of a Monster Administration Bureau managing supernatural beings is fascinating, and the interactions between humans and yaoguai are often hilarious and heartwarming.

The characters are another strong point. Fu Li is a gem – kind, strong, and genuinely good-natured without being a pushover. His relationship with Zhuang Qing, the initially cold and aloof ML, is a slow burn that eventually blossoms into something incredibly sweet. I especially enjoyed how Fu Li, being much older than Zhuang Qing, often treats him like a child, leading to some genuinely funny moments. The side characters are also well-developed, adding depth and humor to the story.

I also appreciated the novel's emphasis on time and the changing world, with the decline of the yaoguai and the rise of humans. There are moments of angst, particularly surrounding Fu Li's past, but they are balanced by the overall lighthearted tone.

The romance is definitely slow-burn, with the main couple not officially getting together until quite late in the story. Also, I can see why some might find the plot somewhat predictable.
