The premise is simple but powerful: Lu Tong, after enduring a brutal upbringing, returns home to find her family destroyed. What sets this apart from other revenge stories is that Lu Tong has no special advantages – no rebirth, no OP skills, just her wits and determination.

What Works Well

The character of Lu Tong is definitely a highlight. She's cold, calculating, and ruthless, but also vulnerable and deeply scarred. I appreciated how the author explores her internal conflicts and the toll her quest takes on her humanity. Her relationship with Yinzheng, her loyal maid, adds a layer of warmth to the otherwise bleak narrative. The slow-burn romance with Pei Yunying is also well-executed. Their dynamic, filled with suspicion, mutual respect, and undeniable attraction, is captivating. The stark contrast between the lives of the wealthy and the commoners is a recurring theme, adding depth and complexity to the story. The plot is well-paced, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged.

While I enjoyed the novel, I did find some aspects less appealing. Some sections felt repetitive, with the author belaboring certain points. Additionally, Lu Tong's coldness, while understandable, could sometimes make her difficult to connect with. Finally, the ending felt somewhat rushed, and I would have liked to see more of the characters' lives after the main conflict was resolved.
