The initial chapters immediately threw me into Jiang Ruan's tragic past life, and the sheer brutality of her experiences definitely set the tone for a darker, more ruthless revenge plot than some other novels in this genre. The pacing was quick, and I was immediately hooked on seeing how she would dismantle those who wronged her.
What Works Well
The author's strength truly lies in the complex political and familial scheming. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, and I appreciated that the story respected my intelligence as a reader. Jiang Ruan is a compelling protagonist – clever, calculating, and determined. The romance, while slower-paced, felt meaningful and well-developed. I particularly enjoyed the male lead's initial suspicion and eventual unwavering support of Jiang Ruan, creating a dynamic I found more intriguing than instant, unquestioning love.
Areas of Concern
While the intense focus on revenge was initially appealing, I did find that it occasionally overshadowed other aspects of the story, particularly character development. Some side characters felt underdeveloped. Also, the ending felt somewhat rushed compared to the intricate plotting that came before.
