My Thoughts on Ultimate Antihero
"Ultimate Antihero" is a web novel that definitely left me with mixed feelings. It has a lot of potential, and in some areas, it really shines. However, it also stumbles in ways that kept me from fully embracing it. It's a story about Homura, a powerful individual ostracized for his abilities, who ends up teaching a group of magician girls. The premise is intriguing, but the execution is where things get complicated.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the concept of an overpowered protagonist who's not your typical hero. The idea of someone being feared for their strength is a refreshing twist. However, I quickly realized that the initial setup might not be as unique as I'd hoped. The early volumes felt somewhat formulaic, with familiar tropes popping up that made it difficult to fully invest.
What Works Well
Despite some initial reservations, I found myself enjoying certain aspects of the novel. The action scenes are a definite highlight, and the world-building, with its Cthulhu Mythos references, adds a layer of depth that I appreciated. I also felt that the character development, particularly for the main cast like Sumika, Chikori, Shiori and Vel, was well done. They each had distinct personalities and reacted to challenges in believable ways, which made them more relatable. The characters felt like they had a tridimensional personality.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest issues, and one that seemed to be shared by many readers, is the pacing of the later volumes, especially the final one. The ending felt rushed and incomplete, leaving several plot threads unresolved. The villains, while initially promising, didn't quite live up to their potential. The focus shifted abruptly, and certain character arcs felt underdeveloped or even detrimental to the overall story.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Ultimate Antihero" is a mixed bag. It has moments of brilliance, particularly in its action and character development, but it's ultimately held back by pacing issues and a rushed ending. It's an enjoyable read, especially if you're a fan of overpowered protagonists and Lovecraftian themes, but be prepared for a potentially unsatisfying conclusion. I'd give it a tentative 3.5/5. It's a fun ride, but it could have been so much more.
