This novel is quite the rollercoaster. Going in, I was expecting a sweet romance with some time travel elements. What I got was a hefty dose of angst, a morally questionable male lead, and a female protagonist who deserves a medal.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely threw me for a loop. The premise is fairly straightforward: a modern woman transmigrates into the body of a princess ordered to marry a prince, Ming Haoxuan, who is anything but charming. Instead, he's portrayed as cruel and uses the marriage for revenge. It's a jarring start, and definitely not the fluffy read I anticipated.
What Works Well
Despite the heavy themes, the female lead is a major draw. Her strength and resilience in the face of adversity are admirable. I found myself rooting for her, even when the plot veered into some pretty dark territory. The humor, when it appears, is also well-placed, offering moments of levity amidst the drama. I also appreciated the short chapter length, making it easy to digest even when the content was intense. The second arc, set in modern times, offers a fresh start and a change of pace, and some readers found it more enjoyable than the ancient China setting.
Areas of Concern
Okay, let's address the elephant in the room: the male lead. He's not your typical "misunderstood" bad boy. His actions are genuinely awful, bordering on abusive. While some readers might be drawn to the potential redemption arc, I personally struggled to find any redeeming qualities in him for a significant portion of the story. This novel also delves into mature themes, including r*pe and netorare, which may be triggering for some readers. The dog blood and angst also might not be as satisfactory as some readers would like.
