The story follows Wei Fuyuan, a somewhat hapless rich kid, and Bei Quan, a Taoist master, as they navigate the world of ghosts and the supernatural through a radio show.
First Impressions
I was immediately intrigued by the premise. The idea of a radio station for people connected to the spirit world felt fresh, and the initial setup of Wei Fuyuan needing a job and stumbling into the world of Taoism had a lot of comedic potential. The "seme protagonist" tag initially gave me pause, but I was pleasantly surprised by how the dynamic played out.
What Works Well
The individual mysteries in each arc are genuinely well-crafted. The way the author draws inspiration from real-life events or existing ghost stories, while still creating unique and often poignant cases, is a real strength. I also appreciated the diversity in the types of supernatural entities and situations the protagonists faced; it kept the story from becoming repetitive.
The relationship between Wei Fuyuan and Bei Quan is a definite highlight, although it's a slow burn. Wei Fuyuan's enthusiastic and somewhat naive personality is a great contrast to Bei Quan's more worldly and sly demeanor, leading to plenty of humorous moments. I particularly enjoyed the way their romance developed organically, with neither character falling first or harder, which I found quite refreshing.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the slow-burn romance, I can see why some readers might find it lacking.
