My Thoughts on Thriller Trainee
"Thriller Trainee" is a web novel that throws you headfirst into a world of transmigration, infinite loops, and deadly games. I was intrigued by the premise – a blend of action, horror, and even a dash of romance (yaoi, to be specific). While the overall rating is quite high, my experience was a bit more nuanced than a simple thumbs-up.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely grabbed my attention. The idea of a magician thrust into a series of increasingly dangerous "instances" was compelling. I was eager to see how the protagonist, with his supposed antisocial tendencies, would navigate this bizarre new reality.
What Works Well
The instances themselves are a definite highlight. I found the author's creativity shining through in the variety of scenarios, from a psychiatric hospital to a Lovecraftian circus. The "live audience" commentary, while sometimes repetitive, added a unique layer to the experience, creating a sense of reality TV meets survival horror.
Many readers seem to love the relationship between the MC and the ML, describing it as a true "enemies to lovers" story with intense chemistry. The tension is palpable, and the power dynamics are fascinating. Some even felt the slow-burn romance was well-earned and satisfying, with a satisfying payoff in the later chapters. I definitely appreciated that the MC and ML are both flawed characters, and I liked that the author didn't shy away from a morally grey romance.
Areas of Concern
Honestly, the plot sometimes felt like it was taking a backseat to the romance. There were times when I wished the horror elements were more consistently emphasized. Also, the convenience of the MC's solutions to the problems that he faces can be a bit jarring. It felt like the author sometimes sacrificed logical consistency for the sake of plot progression.
