Description
Katsumi Yuuto, mistakenly summoned as a hero to defeat the Demon King in another world, lands in the world of Astoria as a regular person without receiving any power from the goddess. However, the Remiel Kingdom, which failed in summoning the hero, fears the condemnation from all over the world and decides to treat Yuuto as the hero. Forced to fight as a hero, Yuuto, in the midst of battle, witnesses his beloved childhood friend, Miyako Kagurazaka, who was also inadvertently summoned like him, being killed by one of Four Heavenly Kings from the Demon Army. Vowing revenge, Yuuto acquires the means to fight over many years and successfully defeats the Demon King including the mastermind, the goddess. However, immediately afterward, he is swallowed into the interstice of dimensions and regains consciousness in modern-day Japan before he was summoned to another world.

My Thoughts on The Strongest Hero Wants to Protect His Childhood Friend
This web novel, "The Strongest Hero Wants to Protect His Childhood Friend," certainly took me for a ride. It's a blend of genres that, while potentially interesting, ultimately left me with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
Initially, I went in expecting a lighthearted romantic comedy, perhaps with a slice-of-life feel centered around school. However, the story quickly pivots into something far more complex, introducing supernatural elements and hinting at a harem dynamic. This genre shift wasn't inherently bad, but it definitely changed the tone and my expectations for the story.
What Works Well
The premise itself is intriguing: a former hero, returning to his normal life, now wants to safeguard his childhood friend. The potential for adventure and character development is definitely present. I was especially interested in how the author would balance the protagonist's past life as a hero with his current, more mundane existence. The idea of him using his past experiences to protect those he cares about is a strong foundation.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that dampened my enjoyment was the protagonist's attitude towards his old friends. While I can understand the desire to move on, his seeming reluctance to engage with them felt jarring and made it difficult for me to connect with him. His supposed longing for his past life didn't quite translate into his actions, creating a disconnect that hindered my investment in the story. It felt like a missed opportunity to explore the complexities of reintegrating into a normal life after experiencing extraordinary events.
Final Verdict
"The Strongest Hero Wants to Protect His Childhood Friend" has a compelling core concept, but its execution leaves something to be desired. The abrupt shift in genre and the protagonist's inconsistent behavior hindered my overall enjoyment. While the potential for an exciting adventure is present, several elements need refinement to truly shine. For now, I'd recommend approaching this novel with cautious optimism.
