Description
Waking up, Kim Hajin finds himself in a familiar world but an unfamiliar body. A world he created himself and a story he wrote, yet never finished. He had become his novel’s extra, a filler character with no importance to the story. The only clue to escaping is to stay close to the main storyline. However, he soon finds out the world isn’t exactly identical to his creation.

My Thoughts on The Novel’s Extra
"The Novel's Extra" is a web novel that throws you headfirst into a familiar yet twisted world: that of a struggling author transmigrated into his own creation. The premise alone had me hitting "read," and while the journey had its ups and downs, it definitely left an impression.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the novelty of the setup. Our protagonist, a somewhat unremarkable author, finds himself not as the hero, but as a forgettable extra in the very novel he penned. This subversion of the typical isekai trope was refreshing. I was eager to see how he'd navigate a world he thought he knew, especially with the added challenge of a co-author throwing curveballs into the narrative.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the potential for character development. The girls in the story aren't instantly smitten, and the protagonist isn't some overpowered Gary Stu from the get-go. The story allows for growth, mistakes, and genuine relationships. The protagonist's internal struggles and his awareness of the world as a story he once controlled added a layer of complexity that kept me invested. I also enjoyed the moments of humor sprinkled throughout, especially the slice-of-life scenes.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself sharing some of the concerns raised by other readers. The plot occasionally felt convoluted, jumping between arcs without a clear sense of direction. The "misunderstanding" trope, a staple in many Korean dramas, was overused to the point of frustration. The story has a habit of introducing interesting plot threads then dropping them without resolution. It felt as if the author had lost sight of the initial premise, and it devolved into something more generic.

Final Verdict
"The Novel's Extra" is a mixed bag. It has a compelling premise and moments of genuine brilliance, particularly in its character interactions and world-building. However, it suffers from a lack of focus, repetitive tropes, and abandoned plotlines. While it kept me entertained for a while, it ultimately fell short of its potential. I would say give it a try if you're a fan of the genre, but be prepared for a bumpy ride. I'd give it a solid 3/5.
