The dynamic between Zhou Sou and Marshal Shao is undeniably the highlight. Their initial meeting, with the injured Marshal relying on Zhou Sou, subverts typical power dynamics, and I found that quite refreshing. The humor is definitely present, especially in Shao's "eloquence," which apparently rivals that of a seasoned scammer! I also appreciate that the novel doesn't wallow in the grimness of the apocalypse; it maintains a lighter tone, focusing on the characters and their interactions. Zhou Sou himself is an interesting protagonist. He might seem naive at first, having been isolated for a decade, but he's actually quite intelligent and principled. His easy-going nature contrasts nicely with the Marshal's arrogance, creating a compelling partnership.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I can understand some of the criticisms. The beginning can feel a bit disjointed, and some events, particularly towards the ending, might seem abrupt. A little more fleshing out in certain areas would have definitely improved the experience.
