Description
The Age of Gods has long since ended, their voices no longer heard on the continent of Douluo. Humanity, standing on the shoulders of legends from its history, advanced soul technology to inconceivable heights. The humans of Douluo invented weapons of mass destruction, mechanized armor, and living metals. With these advancements, they went on to conquer the oceans and discovered two new continents. To fuel these new technologies, humanity hunted the soul beasts to the very brink of extinction. Once the dominant force of Douluo, the few surviving soul beasts now hide in the darkest recesses of their last sanctuary. The weakest have all been hunted, leaving only the strongest to scheme in the heart of the forest. The soul beasts, not willing to fade away, plot an uprising for their survival. In the midst of this, a god from a long forgotten era awakens in the depths of the Great Star Dou Forest to seek vengeance for the soul beasts. As darkness encroaches from the abyss, hope is found in a young boy who holds a power beyond divinity within himself—Tang Wulin! Hope for both humanity and the soul beasts, as the bridge between the two. He finds his way into the fabled halls of Shrek Academy, where he learns to wield his prodigious powers, makes friends and finds allies, eventually rising to become a towering leader. As he learns to harness his strength, danger lurks within the shadows as the various factions of humanity maneuver and plot to usurp Shrek Academy. Tang Wulin discovers the threat to the only world he knows as he sinks deeper into the intrigue. Meanwhile, camouflaged by the chaos and unbeknownst to the humans, the soul beasts’ plot continues to steadily advance. To defend what he loves and reclaim what was lost, Tang Wulin must seek out the legacies of legends past and unlock the full might of the Golden Dragon King!

My Thoughts on The Legend of the Dragon King
Alright, let's dive into The Legend of the Dragon King. As a web novel enthusiast, I was eager to see how this installment in the Douluo Dalu universe would hold up. After spending some time with it, I have some thoughts.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the setting, thousands of years after the original Douluo Dalu. The integration of soul power into a more technologically advanced world, with things like soul cars and communicators, was a cool concept. I was also curious about Tang Wulin, the main character, and his seemingly "trash" martial soul, a blue silver grass. It felt like a fresh start.
What Works Well
I found the early parts of the story quite engaging. The interactions between Tang Wulin and his classmates felt relatable, and the cultivation system, while familiar, was easy to follow. The author does a good job of detailing Tang Wulin's blacksmithing endeavors, which really added another layer to the world and character development. I also appreciated that the main character, Tang Wulin, had a good-natured and honest personality.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I noticed some issues. The pacing sometimes felt rushed, sacrificing plot development for quick power-ups. I felt like the unique aspects of the Douluo Dalu series, like the importance of spirit rings acquired from hunting spirit beasts, were diminished. The focus shifted more towards bloodline abilities and artificially manufactured spirit souls, making it feel more like a generic xuanhuan novel. It also seemed like the main character was becoming overpowered too quickly. Additionally, I noticed that the plot contains a lot of tournaments, and sometimes the author didn't know what to write, so they just mixed a bunch of tournaments together.

Final Verdict
Overall, The Legend of the Dragon King is a mixed bag. While it has some interesting concepts and engaging moments, it also suffers from pacing issues, a deviation from the original series' strengths, and a somewhat controversial ending. I think that if you're a die-hard Douluo Dalu fan, it might be worth checking out, but don't expect it to reach the same heights as the earlier installments. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, with a rating of 3 out of 5 stars.
