Description
Wang Yanqing’s father died in battle. She was adopted as an orphan by the Marquis of Zhenyuan. She loved Fu Tingzhou for ten years and would go through fire and water for him. However, this woman carried a family history full of scars, and ultimately, Fu Tingzhou sought another woman to marry. Ten years of effort turned out to be a joke. Fu Tingzhou accompanied his fiancé to buy incense outside the city, completely forgetting that it was Wang Yanqing’s birthday. On the road, they encountered an ambush and Fu Tingzhou became busy protecting his fiancée. While defending Fu Tingzhou, Wang Yanqing lost her footing and fell off a cliff. After waking up, she lost her memory and only knew that she had to repay her gratitude. The man sitting in front of her bed smiled and reached out to touch her head: “Qing Qing, have you forgotten? You were plotted against by the Fu family and lost your memory. We’ve always known each other; we were childhood sweethearts.” She didn’t know that the man sitting in front of her was the renowned commander of the Imperial Guards, Lu Heng. He was also an old enemy of the Fu family. He was the main culprit of the assassination attempt on Fu Tingzhou that resulted in Wang Yanqing falling off the cliff. After Wang Yanqing was taken, Fu Tingzhou went crazy. Fu Tingzhou rushed to the Imperial Guards desperately. Just as he asked Wang Yanqing to leave with him, he was stabbed by her sword. Fu Tingzhou looked up in shock to see her acting coquettishly with another person: “Older brother, I caught the Fu traitor.” Wang Yanqing didn’t know that after she walked away, Lu Heng drove the sword deeper and smiled at Fu Tingzhou: “Thanks for taking care of Qing Qing for the past few years. What a pity. Now she is mine.”

My Thoughts on The Imperial Guard’s Revenge
"The Imperial Guard's Revenge" took me on a wild ride through ancient China, blending detective work with political intrigue and a dash of romance. I found myself thoroughly entertained by the unconventional plot and the complex characters, making it a novel I couldn't easily put down.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit hesitant. The summary hints at a manipulative male lead and a female lead who suffers, which isn't usually my cup of tea. However, the author's reputation for well-written stories with intricate characters piqued my curiosity, and I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did!
What Works Well
The detective case-solving aspect set against the backdrop of ancient China is a major highlight. The cases are intriguing, and the power dynamics within the empire create a compelling atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the dynamic between the leads as they tackled these mysteries.
Many readers, including myself, found the male lead, Lu Heng, to be a fascinating character, despite his flaws. He's cunning, ambitious, and not afraid to use morally questionable tactics to achieve his goals. What makes him compelling is his self-awareness and willingness to accept the consequences of his actions.
The female lead, Wang Qingqing, is equally captivating. Her ability to read micro-expressions is a unique talent that adds another layer to the story. Her character growth, particularly after losing her memory, is well-developed and satisfying to witness.
Areas of Concern
The main point of contention for me, and something other readers have also mentioned, is the manipulative nature of the male lead's initial interactions with the female lead. He lies to her and takes advantage of her amnesia, which can be a significant turn-off for some. However, I found that it aligns with his character and the overall tone of the story.
Some readers also felt that the ending was rushed and that the political intrigue overshadowed the romance in the later chapters. While I agree that the ending could have been more fleshed out, I didn't mind the focus on politics, as it added depth to the world-building.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, I thoroughly enjoyed "The Imperial Guard's Revenge." The complex characters, intriguing plot, and unique setting make it a worthwhile read. If you're willing to overlook the initial manipulation and appreciate morally gray characters, I highly recommend giving this novel a try.
