My Thoughts on Seikoku no Ryuu Kishi
"Seikoku no Ryuu Kishi," or Dragonar Academy, presents an interesting premise: a world where humans bond with dragons at a special academy. I went into this novel with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the mixed reactions I'd seen. What I found was a story with some genuinely intriguing elements, hampered by inconsistencies and questionable choices.
First Impressions
The initial hook is definitely there. The idea of dragon riders, coupled with a school setting, immediately conjures up images of adventure and camaraderie. The blend of genres—action, fantasy, and a touch of romance—seemed promising. I was ready to dive into a world of knights, dragons, and magical battles.
What Works Well
The world-building, at its core, is actually quite compelling. The concept of dragons as integral to the world's magic system, and the bond between dragon and rider, is explored with some creativity. There are moments where the action sequences are genuinely exciting, and the interactions between some of the characters can be endearing. Some readers seem to find the characters of Rebecca, Oscar, and Eco to be genuinely endearing, and I can see why. I think the author has a good foundation for a story that can grow into something special.
Areas of Concern
However, the execution leaves something to be desired. I found myself questioning some of the plot points and character motivations. One issue that stood out to me was the inconsistency in the magic system. The logic behind the dragons' dwindling numbers and their role as magic conduits felt contradictory. It weakened the overall sense of believability within the world. I also found the depiction of certain relationships, particularly the "comedic" abuse, to be quite jarring and uncomfortable. It detracted from my enjoyment of the story and raised some serious ethical concerns. The author's indecisiveness between genres also made it difficult to get immersed. The story couldn't decide whether or not it wanted to be a fantasy echi or soft p*rn.

Final Verdict
"Seikoku no Ryuu Kishi" has potential, but it needs some serious refinement. The core ideas are interesting, but the inconsistencies and questionable choices in character interactions hinder the overall experience. If the author can address these issues, this series could evolve into something truly special. As it stands, it's a mixed bag that requires a degree of tolerance for its flaws.
