Initially, I found myself a bit lost in the narrative. The animosity between the main characters is palpable from the start, but the reasons behind it are shrouded in mystery. This did pique my interest, pushing me to uncover the secrets of their past. It's a slow burn, with the full picture of their love story only emerging later, which can be a bit frustrating if you're looking for immediate gratification.
What Works Well
The tragic elements are undeniably compelling. The novel explores themes of fate, duty, and the heavy price of love in a turbulent historical setting. The author paints a vivid picture of ancient China, immersing you in the world of emperors, concubines, and warring factions. I appreciated the multiple points of view, which added depth and complexity to the story. The male lead's initial coldness towards the female lead is eventually revealed to be rooted in deep pain and misunderstanding, making their eventual reconciliation all the more satisfying (for some, at least). The love interest falls first trope is also a strong point for many readers.

While the melodrama can be entertaining, it sometimes veers into excess. Some might find the female lead's self-deprecating behavior tiresome, wishing she would simply move on from the past.
