First Impressions
From the get-go, I was hooked by the premise: a finance major unexpectedly inheriting a Taoist temple and having to juggle the modern world with the supernatural. The initial chapters are a whirlwind of clever problem-solving and laugh-out-loud moments as our MC, Xie Lingya, navigates his new reality. I immediately appreciated the author's attention to detail regarding Taoist practices, making the world feel authentic and immersive.
What Works Well
The characters are undoubtedly the heart of this novel. Xie Lingya is a fantastic protagonist—carefree, talented, and genuinely caring. His "modern problems require modern solutions" attitude is endlessly entertaining. The male lead, while more reserved, complements Xie Lingya perfectly. Their dynamic is a slow-burn romance that feels natural and rewarding.
I also loved the supporting cast, from the quirky Pokeweed spirit to the seemingly ordinary, yet powerful, God Official Wang. Each character is well-developed and memorable, adding depth and richness to the story. The plot itself is engaging, with a good balance of adventure, slice-of-life moments, and supernatural battles. The author does a great job of exploring themes of morality and human nature within the context of the supernatural world.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, the romance is definitely a subplot. If you're primarily looking for a romance-heavy story, you might find it lacking. The focus is more on the MC's journey and the supernatural events he encounters. Also, the male lead could have used a bit more character development, as he's often overshadowed by the MC's vibrant personality.
