Description
She finds herself in the shoes of a tragic secondary female character in a Western novel. Eloise is now in Manhattan during the Gilded Age of New York. The late 19th century is a time of opulence and extravagance, with bustling harbors. However, the original owner of the body is still a young girl, living with her younger brother at her aunt’s house. Five people crammed into a small room, with leaking walls, dilapidated floors, and windows letting in the cold wind. After paying the weekly rent, they can’t afford coal, flour, or even a decent meal, with potatoes boiled in water being a constant in their pot. They can’t even muster up three pairs of leather shoes among the entire family. Eloise stares at the howling snow outside the window, worried, as she doesn’t even own a thick scarf. She plans to revive her past profession. Starting with sewing a piece of clothing to keep warm.

My Thoughts on Nineteenth Century Woman Tailor
"Nineteenth Century Woman Tailor" offered an interesting blend of historical setting and business acumen, and I found myself quite intrigued by the premise. It's a story that throws you right into the thick of things, and while it has some flaws, it was ultimately an enjoyable read.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn to the idea of a female protagonist carving her own path in the 19th century, especially in the cutthroat world of business. The early chapters painted a vivid picture of her struggles and ambitions, and I was eager to see how she would navigate the societal constraints of the time. I was hopeful that this would be a unique take on the historical fiction genre.
What Works Well
The protagonist's strong-willed nature and strategic thinking are definitely highlights. I appreciated how she wasn't portrayed as perfect; she's aware of her limitations and isn't afraid to play the game to get ahead. Her tailoring skills serve as the foundation for her rise, and watching her build her business from the ground up to eventually owning a department store was satisfying. The "golden finger" element, while present, felt like a helpful boost rather than an overpowered crutch, which I appreciated. It smoothed the path, but didn't eliminate the struggles. I found the side character Nasha and her story arc very interesting, particularly the behind-the-scenes look at the entertainment industry.
Areas of Concern
While the protagonist's success is generally a positive, I couldn't help but notice that almost everything she tries seems to work out. This made the story feel a bit too lighthearted at times, diminishing the impact of the challenges she faced. The romance, while present, felt somewhat underdeveloped. The male lead came across more as a supporting character than a genuine love interest, and I struggled to fully invest in their relationship. The age gap between the characters also gave me pause, even acknowledging that it was more common during that era.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Nineteenth Century Woman Tailor" is a worthwhile read, especially if you're a fan of business-driven stories with a historical backdrop. While the romance and somewhat predictable success rate left something to be desired, the protagonist's journey and the exploration of her ambition in a restrictive society kept me engaged. I'd recommend it to readers looking for a relatively lighthearted, character-driven story with a strong female lead.
