Description
In the far future where space travel and colonialization have become the norm, humanity has expanded its living space to the far reaches of the known galaxy. Due to legalization from the govermental body, post-war Space Pirates activities are now reduced to more legal jobs (like errand running and staging raids for the entertainment of space travellers). The cessation of illegal activities is gradually causing them to pass into local legend. Marika Kato is a high school girl living a rather ordinary life as a member of the space yacht club and a part-time job at the high-class retro Lamp Café. One day, Marika learns of her recently deceased father, Gonzaemon, who is revealed to have been a Space Pirate. In order for her father’s ship, the Bentenmaru, to continue legal operation, Marika, Gonzaemon’s direct descendant, is chosen to become the ship’s new captain, thus beginning her life as a Space Pirate.

Alright, buckle up, spacefarers! I've been diving into "Miniskirt Space Pirates," and I'm ready to share my thoughts. It's a fun ride through the cosmos with a female protagonist leading the charge, and there's definitely a lot to enjoy.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of adventure and the unique premise. Let's be honest, "miniskirt space pirates" is a catchy title! I came in expecting a lighthearted romp, and for the most part, that's exactly what I got. The beginning is particularly strong, setting up the world and characters nicely.
What Works Well
The world-building is quite engaging, and I especially appreciate how the novels expand on the anime. The characters are also a major draw. Seeing some of the supporting characters, like the crew of the Barbarossa, get more fleshed out is a definite plus. It adds depth and makes the universe feel more alive. The plot, while sometimes a bit silly, keeps you entertained. The shoujo-ai subplot adds a nice layer for those who enjoy that kind of thing. The series diverges significantly from the anime past volume 3, so there are new characters and locations to discover.
Areas of Concern
One thing I found a bit frustrating is the translation status. It seems like getting a complete, readily available translation is a bit of a challenge. I also heard some complaints that the plot is driven by someone being... well, not the sharpest tool in the shed.
