My Thoughts on Mer, I Love You
"Mer, I Love You" certainly left me with a lot to think about, and a somewhat bittersweet feeling. This blend of drama, fantasy, mystery, romance, and sci-fi elements promised a lot, and while it delivered in some aspects, it stumbled a bit in others. As a completed story, it offers a full narrative arc, which is always a plus.
First Impressions
The initial draw for me was definitely the premise. The combination of amnesia, fated lovers, and the scientist setting immediately piqued my interest. I was eager to dive into the mystery and unravel the connection between the main characters. The "oneshot" tag also suggested a concise, impactful story, which I generally appreciate.
What Works Well
The writing is undeniably a strong point. The author has a knack for evocative language, painting vivid pictures and drawing you into the world they've created. The prose flows beautifully, and the translation (as I understand it) maintains that quality. I found myself easily immersed in the atmosphere, appreciating the subtle nuances in the descriptions and dialogue. The overall plot, despite being concise, is intriguing and kept me guessing.
Areas of Concern
While the writing style is commendable, I felt that the characters could have been more developed. The male lead, in particular, came across as rather stoic and detached. It was difficult to connect with him on an emotional level, which hindered my investment in the romance. The female lead, while perhaps intended to be innocent, sometimes felt a little too passive and lacking in agency. A bit more depth and complexity in their personalities would have elevated the story significantly. I also thought that some of the plot points could have been expanded upon to create a richer and more satisfying experience.
Final Verdict
"Mer, I Love You" is a worthwhile read, especially if you're looking for a short, beautifully written story with a touch of melancholy. While the characters could use more development and the plot could benefit from further expansion, the author's skillful use of language and the intriguing premise make it an enjoyable experience overall. I'd recommend it with the caveat that you might be left wanting a bit more depth and emotional connection.
