"Knight's Chivalry" throws you headfirst into a classic fantasy setting with a twist. We follow Cruz, a knight aspirant who, let's be honest, isn't exactly shining. He's at the bottom of his academy, seemingly outmatched in every aspect. The premise is intriguing: a protagonist who's not naturally gifted, striving for something seemingly out of reach. It's a familiar trope, but one that can be incredibly compelling if executed well.
What Works Well
The world-building seems solid, setting the stage for potential political intrigue and magical conflicts. I appreciate the focus on academy life, as it allows for character development and relationship building. The concept of Cruz's unique fighting style, centered around defense, is also interesting. It sets him apart and offers a different approach to combat that I'm eager to see explored further. The action sequences, while limited, seem well-described, and I found myself rooting for Cruz despite his shortcomings.
Areas of Concern
My main reservation lies with the pacing. It feels somewhat slow, especially regarding Cruz's progress. While I understand the importance of building a foundation, I'm starting to wonder when we'll see a significant leap forward. The side characters could also use some more depth. They feel a bit underdeveloped, serving primarily to highlight Cruz's struggles rather than having their own compelling arcs. I'm also concerned that Cruz's "defense only" fighting style might become repetitive if not handled carefully. He needs to evolve beyond just being a punching bag.

"Knight's Chivalry" has potential. The premise is engaging, and the world-building is promising. However, the slow pacing and underdeveloped side characters hold it back. If the story can pick up the pace, flesh out the supporting cast, and allow Cruz to truly shine, it could become a real gem. For now, I'm cautiously optimistic and hoping to see some significant improvements in the coming chapters.
