Description
The student council’s chairman and few of its officers appealed that the girl that they had been doting on had been bullied. The suspect seemed to be the Chairman‘s fiancée. My Thoughts on Īkagen’ni shitara?
Īkagen’ni shitara? promised a quick dive into the world of broken engagements and student councils, so I jumped in, ready for some shoujo drama. As a short, complete story, it’s an easy commitment, but my experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. The idea of a "fad story" subverting the typical villainess trope sounded promising. However, I quickly found myself struggling to understand who was narrating and what was happening. The story throws you into the action without much setup, leaving you to piece things together as you go.
What Works Well
Despite the initial confusion, I appreciated the concept of the story. The core idea – a fiancé jumping to conclusions and then facing the consequences – is satisfying. There's a certain appeal in seeing the "cheating bastard" get his just desserts. I also found the female lead's strong stance in breaking off the engagement admirable. Her unwillingness to tolerate being unheard was a definite highlight. The story is short and sweet, so if you're curious, it's not a huge time investment.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue was the clarity of the narrative. It took me a while to figure out whose perspective I was reading from. The lack of clear perspective made it difficult to connect with the story and understand the characters' motivations. While the twist of having a seemingly random character narrate is interesting, it felt somewhat arbitrary and didn't add much to the overall plot. The ending, for me, lacked a certain punch, failing to deliver the satisfying conclusion I was hoping for.

Final Verdict
Īkagen’ni shitara? has potential, but it ultimately falls short due to its confusing narrative. While the premise is appealing and the comeuppance is satisfying, the lack of clarity and somewhat lackluster ending prevent it from being a truly enjoyable read. If you're willing to wade through some initial confusion for a quick dose of shoujo drama, it might be worth a try. However, be prepared for a slightly disjointed experience. I'd give it a tentative 3/5.
