"Jealous in Nature" promised a blend of comedy, drama, and romance in an ancient China setting, and it largely delivered a story that kept me entertained, even if some aspects weren't as fleshed out as I'd hoped.
First Impressions
The premise itself – enemies-to-lovers with a dash of reincarnation and revenge – hooked me immediately. The idea of Wei Zan getting a second chance to not only prevent his family's downfall but also to navigate his complicated relationship with Shen Yuan was intriguing. I jumped in expecting a complex plot with political intrigue, but it became clear early on that the core of this story is the romance between the two leads.
What Works Well
The characterization, especially of Shen Yuan, is a major strength. He's not your typical gentle protagonist; his jealousy and pettiness, stemming from a tragic past, make him feel incredibly real and relatable. I found myself rooting for him, even when he was being, well, a bit of a brat. The dynamic between Shen Yuan and Wei Zan is the heart of the story. Watching their relationship evolve from rivals to lovers, despite Shen Yuan's constant needling and Wei Zan's initial arrogance, was genuinely enjoyable. The side characters, though not heavily featured, added charm and depth to the world. Madam Hou, in particular, seemed to be a fan favorite. The author does a good job of balancing the sweet and angsty moments, creating a story that is heartwarming without being overly saccharine.
Areas of Concern
While the romance is compelling, the plot surrounding the schemes and conspiracies felt somewhat underdeveloped. The revenge aspect, while present, often happened "behind the scenes," leaving me wanting more direct confrontation. Also, Shen Yuan's jealousy, while understandable, occasionally veered into the realm of annoying, requiring a good deal of patience from the reader (and from Wei Zan, who apparently has the patience of a saint!).
