Description
Tao Ling’s surname is Tao, and therefore he loves to escape. However, there is nowhere to escape in life, including dreamland—until he stumbles upon a young florist. The name of the young man is Wen Qingying. He can neither speak nor hear. As such, Tao Ling would come around the flower shop every day to chit-chat as much as he pleased. Then one day, the young man suddenly spoke, “I’ve caught you red-handed many times.” Tao Ling: “???” Wen Qingying: “I won’t expose you as long as you come home with me.” Tao Ling: “!!!” Note: Tao Ling’s surname, Tao(陶tao2) sounds the same as “escape” in Chinese.

My Thoughts on Insomnia
"Insomnia" is a mature yaoi novel that pulled me in with its complex characters and exploration of grief, love, and family drama. While the ending might not satisfy everyone, the journey of these imperfect souls finding solace in each other is, for the most part, a worthwhile one.
First Impressions
The initial chapters establish a slow-burn romance between two men grappling with their own personal demons. I appreciated the subtlety in how their feelings developed, a refreshing change from the often overly-sweet BL stories. It felt real, grounded, and emotionally resonant. The slice-of-life vibe in the beginning allowed me to connect with the characters and understand their individual struggles.
What Works Well
The core strength of "Insomnia" lies in its characters and their relationship. The chemistry between the MC and ML is undeniable, and their devotion to each other is heartwarming. I found the intellectual discussions, particularly those related to Daoism, surprisingly engaging and insightful. The author does a fantastic job of portraying the emotional nuances of their relationship, making it feel both tender and passionate. The novel excels in the emotional relationship between the MC and ML. The story and the writing of the emotional background of the characters are excellent.
Areas of Concern
While the romance is a highlight, some plot elements, particularly towards the end, feel rushed and less carefully considered. The family drama surrounding the ML's past, while adding conflict, can feel somewhat forced and detract from the otherwise delicate tone of the story. The ending felt as though it bulldozed through many emotional plotlines previously built up throughout the novel. This left me feeling unsatisfied and as though the potential of the story was not fully realized.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Insomnia" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a mature and emotionally engaging yaoi novel. The flawed characters, the slow-burn romance, and the exploration of complex themes make it stand out. Just be prepared for some potential frustrations with the plot towards the ending. I'd recommend it, but with a slight word of caution.
