"Impossible Lovers" promised a lighthearted romance with a dash of showbiz, and for the most part, it delivered. This novel centers around Zheng Baozhu, a self-made businesswoman who decides to pursue her lifelong dream of acting, and her journey rekindling a relationship with her childhood "enemy," Qu Zhi. Overall, I found it to be a sweet and comforting read, perfect for when you need something uplifting.

First Impressions

The premise immediately grabbed my attention: childhood rivals rediscovering each other as adults. It's a classic trope, but one I'm a sucker for. I was also intrigued by the female lead's ambition and the setting of the entertainment industry, even though I was a bit worried it would be full of drama.

What Works Well

Many aspects of this story resonated with me. I especially appreciated the strong female lead. Zheng Baozhu is intelligent, witty, and unapologetically herself. She's not afraid to use her privilege to help others, and her determination to succeed in acting, starting from the very bottom, is admirable. I also liked how the author showed the women in the entertainment industry supporting each other.

The romance, while slow-burn, felt organic. It was interesting to see Baozhu and Qu Zhi re-evaluate their childhood prejudices and see each other in a new light as adults. Qu Zhi's character, a scientist rather than the typical CEO, was a refreshing change of pace. I also enjoyed that the story touched on mental health issues and family dynamics.

Areas of Concern

While I enjoyed the novel, I did find some elements a bit lacking. I thought the success of the female lead happened unrealistically fast and the middle part of the story dragged. Also, I agree that Qu Zhi's character could have used more depth. The story wrapped up a little too perfectly for my tastes.
