My Thoughts on I’m a Court Magician. Recently, I’ve Been Worrying About the Princess Staring At Me.
This title definitely caught my eye, and I jumped in hoping for a lighthearted fantasy romp with a dash of romance. While the novel delivers on some of those promises, it also throws in a few curveballs that might not be for everyone.
First Impressions
Initially, I was charmed. The writing style is accessible, and the characters are well-defined from the get-go. The European-inspired setting adds a nice touch, and the early chapters establish a pleasant, almost whimsical tone. It felt like settling into a comfortable, easy read.
What Works Well
The character interactions are a strong point. The author does a solid job of creating distinct personalities, and I found myself invested in seeing how they would interact, especially between the MC and the Princess. The magic system, while not overly complex, is well-integrated into the world and provides a good foundation for the action sequences. Furthermore, the initial lighthearted atmosphere makes the story very engaging in the beginning.
Areas of Concern
However, the story takes a darker turn than I anticipated. I was personally a little taken aback by the introduction of morally grey elements like forced conscription and magical manipulation, which clashes with the initial lighthearted tone. The protagonist also falls into the trap of being a bit too dense for his own good, especially when it comes to obvious clues and the Princess's affections. There are also moments where the logic seems to take a backseat to the plot, which pulled me out of the experience.
