Description
If you could redo a failed life, would you love the same person again? I am Masahito Arisugawa, a pianist and violinist. My wife, Miyako, is a world-renowned violinist—a figure who, to me, was always beyond reach. As a musician, I’m second-rate at best. Yet, I believed I had found my own version of happiness. At least, I thought so—until that day. On the day I turned 41, my wife Miyako left, taking our only daughter with her. There had always been someone Miyako admired from her student days—Sousuke Mikami. When she found out that he had divorced, she couldn’t sit still. She took our daughter, Saki, and left to chase after him. Realizing Miyako’s true feelings, I drowned myself in alcohol, despite not being able to handle strong drinks. Lost in despair, I succumbed to acute alcohol poisoning and blacked out. I thought I had died, but when I awoke, I found myself as a 15-year-old again. No, that’s not quite accurate—I hadn’t just returned to my younger self; I had time-slipped 25 years into the past. In other words, I had time-leaped. Before me stretched the world of my first year in high school. At my newly entered school, there were familiar faces from long ago—and a youthful, fresh Miyako. But in this world, I resolved not to get involved with her. (I won’t let myself end up with Miyako. That’s the only thing I’ll change. Nothing else.) I only wished to lead a peaceful life. However, when I unconsciously saved the life of Sachiko Kazami, the flow of time around me—what should have been the same as 25 years ago—began to shift into something entirely different…

My Thoughts on I Won’t Choose You
"I Won’t Choose You" is a web novel that piqued my interest with its premise of second chances and a protagonist determined to forge a different path. After diving in and considering the experiences of other readers, I have some mixed feelings. It's a story with potential, but one that seems to stumble along the way.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn to the idea of a mature main character (MC) armed with the knowledge of his past mistakes. The early chapters promised a thoughtful exploration of regret and the possibility of redemption. The translation quality and integration of music into the story were also immediate highlights for me. It felt like I was embarking on a unique and potentially emotionally resonant journey.
What Works Well
The concept of the MC trying to avoid repeating his past mistakes is compelling. I appreciated that the story delves into the complexities of relationships and the challenges of changing ingrained habits. Several readers also pointed out the significance of music as a core theme and how well the author developed relationships between characters, which I found to be true. The initial premise of the MC trying to distance himself from his ex-wife to avoid the same mistakes was interesting.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the initial promise seems to fade as the story progresses. A recurring criticism I encountered was the MC's apparent regression in maturity. Instead of acting like a 40-year-old with hard-earned wisdom, he often makes questionable decisions and appears naive, even requiring his teenage friends to point out obvious flaws in his thinking. This inconsistency in character development was a major letdown for me.
Another concern revolves around the MC's continued attachment to his ex-wife, despite his stated intentions of forging a new path. This creates a frustrating dynamic where he seems unable to escape the patterns of his past, undermining the central theme of the story. The ending seems to be a point of contention for many, with some describing it as rushed and nonsensical.

Final Verdict
"I Won’t Choose You" is a story with an intriguing premise and moments of genuine promise, but ultimately falls short due to inconsistent character development and a seemingly rushed ending. While the translation quality and initial setup are commendable, the MC's regression and the questionable plot choices make it a frustrating read. If you're looking for a story with a strong, consistently mature protagonist and a satisfying resolution, this might not be the right choice for you. However, if you're willing to overlook these flaws and appreciate the exploration of complex relationships and the role of music, you might find some enjoyment in it. I would give it a cautious recommendation, tempered with the awareness of its shortcomings.
