"I Just Want to Divorce" promised a fresh take on the rebirth trope, and for the most part, it delivered. This drama, romance, and slice-of-life yaoi novel offered a quick but engaging read that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hesitant. Rebirth stories where the MC deals with a past life's "scummy" ML felt overdone. But I was pleasantly surprised. The premise, where the MC wants a divorce from a seemingly cold ML, intrigued me, and I dove in headfirst. The initial chapters immediately grabbed my attention.
What Works Well
The romance is definitely the heart of this story. The dynamic between the MC and ML is compelling, with plenty of misunderstandings that, while frustrating at times, ultimately lead to satisfying character growth. I particularly enjoyed how the ML, despite his high IQ, struggles with emotional expression, leading to some genuinely heartwarming and humorous moments. His devotion to the MC, stemming from a chance encounter years prior, is incredibly sweet and provides a solid foundation for their relationship. The "face-slapping" moments, where the antagonists get their comeuppance, were also satisfying, though not the primary focus. The MC's desire to live freely in his second life is understandable, and his journey towards accepting the ML's affections is well-paced.
Areas of Concern
While I overall enjoyed the story, I did find the MC to be somewhat frustrating at times. His initial standoffishness and assumptions about the ML could be irritating, and I wished he had approached the situation with more openness. Also, the villains felt a little one-dimensional.
