This title is a mouthful, but it perfectly encapsulates the core premise of the story. It's a tale of burnout, freedom, and a protagonist finally deciding to prioritize his own well-being. I went into this novel expecting a lighthearted comedy with a touch of revenge, and while it delivered on some fronts, I also found myself a little frustrated with certain aspects.
First Impressions
The initial chapters definitely grabbed my attention. Seeing the MC, after being exploited and overworked, finally snap and declare "I quit!" was incredibly satisfying. The setup is classic: a secretly powerful individual who was taken advantage of by incompetent superiors. It's a trope I generally enjoy, and I was eager to see how the story would unfold.
What Works Well
The comedic elements are definitely a strong point. There's a certain goofy charm to the narrative, especially in how the town seems to fall apart without the MC's tireless efforts. I found myself chuckling at the sheer incompetence of the characters who relied on him. The premise of watching someone finally enjoy a peaceful life after years of abuse is also inherently appealing. The potential for wish fulfillment is definitely there.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I started to feel a bit disconnected. The MC's naivety sometimes bordered on unbelievable, and I struggled to understand some of his choices. His decision to initially pursue beginner magic and then allow himself to be exploited for so long felt somewhat inconsistent. Additionally, the translation quality seems to be a significant issue, with instances of MTL and inconsistent character names causing confusion. This definitely detracts from the overall reading experience. The lack of clarity regarding the MC's backstory and the timeline of events also left me feeling like I was missing crucial pieces of the puzzle.

"I… Don’t Want to Work Anymore" has a lot of potential, and the initial chapters are undeniably entertaining. However, inconsistencies in the plot, a frustratingly naive protagonist, and translation issues ultimately hold it back. While the comedic elements and the wish-fulfillment aspect are appealing, the story needs more polish and a clearer sense of direction to truly shine. I'd give it a tentative 3/5.
