Initially, I was intrigued by the premise: a protagonist with a harsh background finding solace and strength in a VRMMORPG. The early chapters paint a picture of a character who's a bit cold and detached, shaped by her difficult past. This isn't a typical revenge story, which was a refreshing change of pace. It felt more like a slice-of-life adventure set within a game world, with a strong female lead at the helm.
What Works Well
One of the biggest strengths of this novel is its unconventional approach to the genre. The female lead, Li Xin, is undeniably powerful, often surpassing the male lead in strength and skill. She's independent and rational, a far cry from the damsel-in-distress archetype. The game world itself is creatively built, and I found myself invested in the storylines of the main NPCs. The author also has a knack for world-building, some found the game world creative when it came to some game world building.
Areas of Concern
However, I also encountered some issues that held the novel back from reaching its full potential. The pacing can be inconsistent, with detailed descriptions of quests followed by glossed-over battles. The romance is very slow-burn, with the male lead appearing relatively late in the story. Some readers might find the lack of emotional depth in the characters frustrating, as their interactions can feel somewhat minimal and detached. The ending, in particular, seems to be a point of contention, with many feeling it was rushed and left several plot threads unresolved.
