My Thoughts on I Am Overlord

"I Am Overlord" is a completed xuanhuan web novel that I decided to dive into, knowing full well it was going to be a wild ride. And a ride it was. It's got all the trappings of the genre: action, adventure, a touch of comedy, and yes, even a harem. It's definitely a novel that knows what it is and leans into it.

First Impressions

Initially, I was hooked. The story starts strong, with a good pace and an MC who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. There's a certain charm in watching a protagonist who's both lucky and powerful, especially when he's using that power to settle scores. If you're into face-slapping, treasure-snatching, and sending arrogant antagonists to the afterlife, there's a lot to enjoy here.

What Works Well

The author's writing skill kept me engaged, even when the plot threads felt familiar. The world-building, while not groundbreaking, is solid enough to support the story, and I found myself enjoying the interactions between the MC and his loyal subordinates. The translation is well done, which definitely made the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

However, as I progressed, some cracks started to appear. The power scaling felt inconsistent at times, and I couldn't help but feel like the MC was too lucky. While some enjoy an OP protagonist, it did diminish the tension in certain situations. Moreover, the harem aspect felt a bit forced, with the MC sometimes making arbitrary decisions about who he accepts and rejects.
