My Thoughts on Gekitotsu no Hexennacht
After diving into "Gekitotsu no Hexennacht," I've come away with a mixed, but ultimately positive, impression. This series, penned by Kawakami Minoru, the author of Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon, promises a blend of action, fantasy, and a dash of yuri, all set in a unique world where magic, or Ether, is commonplace.
First Impressions
My initial reaction was definitely intrigued. The premise is captivating: a world where women, known as Witches, hold the power due to their offensive magical capabilities, while men are relegated to defensive roles. Add in a looming apocalyptic threat in the form of a sealed "Black Witch" and a tournament arc to determine the strongest witch, and you've got my attention. It felt like a fresh take on the magical girl genre.
What Works Well
The world-building is definitely a strong point. The author's detailed descriptions really painted a vivid picture of the world. The action sequences are another highlight. They're described with a level of detail that makes them feel truly engaging. I also appreciated the illustrations scattered throughout the novel, which added another layer of immersion. The characters, especially Kagami and Mitsuru's butler, brought a lot of life and humor to the story. I found myself genuinely invested in their journeys and the dynamics between them.
Areas of Concern
The length of the novels might be a barrier for some readers. Kawakami Minoru is known for his expansive writing style, and if you're used to shorter, more concise light novels, the dense exposition might feel overwhelming. Also, while the yuri elements are present, they're more of a slow burn, only truly blossoming towards the end of the series. So, if you're expecting a central focus on romance, you might be slightly disappointed.

Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Gekitotsu no Hexennacht" to be a worthwhile read. While the length and slow-burn romance might not appeal to everyone, the strong world-building, detailed action sequences, and engaging characters make it a captivating fantasy series. I'd recommend it to those who enjoy intricate world-building and don't mind a slower pace.
