Description
Fourteen-year-old Niko is treated as a ‘disease’ for being gay in his countryside town, and decides to commit su*cide. But that summer night, he is saved by the carefree attitude of Sakae, a young boy visiting from a faraway city, and starts acting as the trans character ‘Nicole’ to protect himself from bullying. A few years later, Sakae reappears before Niko as a transfer student. He treats Niko, who had reduced himself to playing the eccentric gay, with honesty and kindness, but doesn’t take Niko’s confession crammed with feelings for his fleeting first love seriously, instead making a request for romantic advice himself…

My Thoughts on Dear Nicole
"Dear Nicole" immediately grabbed my attention with its unique premise and the overwhelmingly positive buzz surrounding it. Diving in, I quickly understood why so many readers are captivated by Niko's story. It's a poignant exploration of identity, acceptance, and the enduring power of the human spirit, even in the face of adversity.
First Impressions
The first chapter is a journey in itself, a comprehensive coming-of-age tale that doesn't shy away from difficult themes. I found myself completely engrossed in Niko's experiences, feeling his pain, his resilience, and his longing for connection. The author paints a vivid picture of his struggles growing up in a rural area where being different comes at a steep price.
What Works Well
What truly shines in "Dear Nicole" is the author's ability to portray complex characters with nuance and empathy. The side characters, even those who cause Niko pain, are presented as flawed but ultimately human, avoiding stereotypical portrayals of "mean" characters. This grounded approach adds a layer of realism that makes the story all the more impactful. Niko's internal monologue is particularly well-written, giving the reader a deep understanding of his thoughts, motivations, and the emotional turmoil he faces. I also appreciate the story's willingness to tackle mature themes like bullying, discrimination, and even suicide, with sensitivity and honesty. The writing style itself is beautiful.
