My Thoughts on Cold Fever
Alright, let's dive into "Cold Fever." This one's a bit of a rollercoaster, and not always in a fun way. It's definitely a story that leaves an impression, whether good or bad depends on your tolerance for dark themes and flawed characters.
First Impressions
Going in, I knew this was going to be heavy. The tags alone – abusive characters, child abuse, psychological themes – were a clear warning. It's a sequel to "Cold Light," and apparently picks up with Toru and Fujishima after some semblance of happiness. However, that happiness is shattered when Toru regains his memories and forgets their time together, reverting to a more... difficult version of himself.
What Works Well
What I found most compelling, and what seems to be a recurring sentiment, is the depth of the characters. They are deeply flawed, and their actions, however reprehensible, are rooted in their past traumas. Toru's attitude, while not excusable, is understandable considering his history. Fujishima's desperate attempts at atonement, even when met with abuse, paint a picture of a man grappling with his own demons. The series doesn't shy away from the darkness, and that commitment to exploring the characters' inner turmoil is a strong point. The plot and character actions are all deeply rooted in the past.
Areas of Concern
The sheer amount of abuse, angst, and drama is a major point of concern. It's not a light read by any means, and the depictions of cruelty can be difficult to stomach. I can understand why some readers would be turned off by the constant negativity and the morally grey (or outright black) nature of the characters. Also, Fujishima's acceptance of abuse might not sit well with everyone, and could be seen as enabling rather than redemptive.

Final Verdict
"Cold Fever" is a challenging and potentially triggering read. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, steer clear. However, if you're drawn to complex, flawed characters and are willing to wade through some darkness, you might find something worthwhile here. It's a story that stays with you, even if not always for the right reasons. I'd recommend proceeding with caution and knowing your limits before diving in.
