"Close to You" promised a sweet campus romance, and while it delivers on that front initially, it's definitely more of a rollercoaster than a gentle stroll through a flower garden. I went in expecting fluff, but I got a hefty dose of drama alongside the sweetness.

The beginning is undeniably charming. We're introduced to a "princess-like" MC and a caring, hardworking ML, and their initial interactions are pretty adorable. There's a definite "spoiling Gong" vibe that some readers, including myself, find incredibly appealing. The campus setting is well-realized, and the budding romance is genuinely engaging.
What Works Well
The core relationship between the MC and ML is the strongest aspect of the novel. The ML's attentiveness and protectiveness are endearing, and the MC, despite his flaws, is ultimately likeable, if a little frustrating at times. I also appreciated the supportive friend group that surrounds them, offering a sense of normalcy amidst the drama. The author creates a vivid story that really sticks with you.

The biggest issue I encountered was the tonal shift in the latter half of the story. What starts as a sweet romance takes a sharp turn into angsty territory, with misunderstandings, family drama, and even a seven-year separation. This felt jarring, and I can understand why some readers felt "cheated" by the initial summery. The MC's character development, or lack thereof, is another point of contention. Some found him to be consistently clumsy and reliant on the ML, while others found his stubbornness and determination to be endearing. I felt that the characters were not always consistent.
