My Thoughts on Chen Yue Zhi Yao
"Chen Yue Zhi Yao" is a unique web novel that's left me with mixed, but overall positive, feelings. It's a story I find myself recommending with a few caveats, as it definitely isn't for everyone.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are admittedly a bit confusing, throwing you headfirst into a world where the protagonist, Fan Tong, is cursed to say the opposite of what he means. Waking up in a new world after dying, burdened by debt from multiple resurrections, and armed with a talking broom – it's a lot to take in! The humor is definitely front and center, and I found myself chuckling at Fan Tong's misfortune, even if it felt a bit overwhelming at times.
What Works Well
The main draw of this novel is undoubtedly the humor, stemming largely from Fan Tong's reversed speech curse. It leads to countless comedic situations and misunderstandings that kept me entertained. Beyond the curse, Fan Tong himself is a compelling character. He's not your typical handsome, overpowered protagonist; instead, he's an "average-looking protagonist", unlucky, and often just trying to survive. This relatability, coupled with his unexpected wit, makes him incredibly endearing. The world-building, though initially perplexing, slowly reveals itself to be intricate and fascinating, filled with intriguing mysteries like the enigmatic "Pond" and diverse characters.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the premise, I can see why some readers might find the plot slow-moving. The story takes its time to unfold, and revelations are gradual. The slow translation pace can be frustrating, making it hard to remember details between updates. Also, the number of characters and the Chinese naming conventions can lead to confusion, especially with infrequent updates.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Chen Yue Zhi Yao" has secured a special place in my heart. The unique premise, the quirky characters, and the laugh-out-loud moments make it a worthwhile read. However, be prepared for a slow-burn plot, infrequent updates, and a protagonist who faces more than his fair share of hardship. If you're looking for a lighthearted yet engaging fantasy with a healthy dose of humor, I recommend giving this novel a try. Just be patient and prepared for a potentially long journey.
