Description
Sakuragi Ryo believes there are three different ranks inside the high school hierarchy. The “A” rank consists of the best looking, the smartest, and the most athletic members of the high school. The “B” ranks are the average members, while the “C” ranks tend to be ignored by the rest of the school. Against his own will, Ryo was dragged into the “A” ranks of his middle school, leading a school life he did not choose. Now entering high school, he vows to stay out of the limelight, and cement himself as part of the “B” ranks. He just wants to live a peaceful and uneventful school life. One evening after school, he runs into a scene of three delinquents surrounding a girl. He was hoping he wouldn’t have to intervene, but the girl was in desperate need of help. The girl he just saved happened to be the prettiest girl of his high school, and now she wants to repay him for saving her. Ryo now must take all measures to not attract the attention of the rest of the school to stay in the “B” ranks.

"B Group no Shounen" presents an interesting premise: a protagonist attempting to live a quiet high school life, only to be thrust into the spotlight by a popular girl. While I found the core concept appealing, my experience was somewhat mixed, aligning with the varied opinions I've seen from other readers.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a "feel-good story." The idea of a protagonist with hidden abilities trying to avoid attention is a trope I often enjoy. The initial chapters set up this dynamic well, introducing the female lead and hinting at the reasons behind the MC's desire for a low profile.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its comedic moments and sweet romantic scenes. The writing style is generally engaging, and the pacing, at least initially, keeps the story moving forward. I particularly appreciated the author's ability to create characters that, despite some flaws, are easy to identify with. The mystery surrounding the MC's past and the source of his trauma also added a layer of intrigue that kept me invested.
Areas of Concern
However, I also encountered some issues that detracted from my overall enjoyment. One common criticism revolves around the female lead and her friend's persistent pursuit of the MC. While some might find their actions endearing, I felt they often crossed the line into harassment. The MC's inability to firmly assert his boundaries and the seemingly manipulative tactics employed by the female characters were frustrating. This dynamic made it difficult for me to fully root for the central romance. Additionally, the rapid progression of the relationship felt somewhat underdeveloped.

If you're willing to overlook these issues and enjoy a lighthearted romance with a slightly flawed protagonist, you might find something to enjoy here. However, proceed with caution and be aware of the potential triggers mentioned above. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars.
