Description
Within the long decaying empire, in the northern borders where the public order has been crumbling, beasts of darkness threaten the livelihood of the people. My Thoughts on Ashes and Kingdoms
"Ashes and Kingdoms" definitely grabbed my attention with its intriguing premise and dark fantasy setting. I jumped in hoping for something a little different, and I wasn't disappointed. While it's not perfect, it has a lot going for it.
First Impressions
The initial chapters painted a grim picture of a world steeped in history and teetering on the edge of collapse, reminiscent of the late Roman Empire. This world-building immediately hooked me. The protagonist isn't some overpowered chosen one, which is a refreshing change. He feels grounded, and his struggles feel real. I appreciate that he has to work for his progress.
What Works Well
The characters are believable, acting with motivations and complexities that make them feel like real people, not just puppets moving the plot along. This is a huge plus for me; well-developed characters can make or break a story. I also appreciate the sense that the world exists independently of the protagonist. It has its own history, its own problems, and its own agency. This makes the setting feel much more alive and immersive. The plot is well-paced, each chapter unveiling another layer of the world and it's characters.
Areas of Concern
Honestly, my biggest concern stems from the ongoing translation. The story has clearly captured my interest, and I'm eager to see where it goes, but the infrequency of updates can be frustrating. I'm hoping the translation pace picks up so I can continue to dive into this world.
Final Verdict
Despite my minor frustrations with the update schedule, "Ashes and Kingdoms" is a solid read. If you're looking for a dark fantasy with a unique world, well-developed characters, and a protagonist who isn't invincible, this might be right up your alley. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars, and I'm definitely sticking around to see how the story unfolds.
